This album brings together, for the first time on a single record, Juan Velert’s output for saxophone and piano — a composer whose career was cut short by illness and whose music had barely travelled beyond the circle where it was written.

Emilio Pérez and Aida Velert deliver a reading that avoids empty virtuosity and focuses on what Velert’s writing asks for: clear melodies, harmonies anchored in modernity, and restrained expression.

Recording this music was less a matter of interpretation than an exercise in listening: understanding what it wanted to say, and getting out of the way.
